| Glad that you posted to support what 80-20 has reported. Next time please leave your name. Asian Ams. must learn how to confront discrimination against us. We need to put ourselves on the line instead of being viewed by the establishment as being hesitant & timid. I also hope that you are doing your personal best to support 80-20. TOGETHER, we shall overcome. Thanks. SB

| The Chinese, as a whole, tend to be apolitical and would rather be subjugated by tyrannical rule, whether by the emperor, or CCP. Even Taiwan was controlled by a fascist dictatorship and under martial law for nearly fifty years. The Japanese also worshipped the emperor and deferred to the policies of the Japanese imperial army that ruled much of Asia during the Second World War. In other words, throughout history, the concept of equal rights was a foreign one. Some, in Orwellian terms, were more ... more ...

| Many AsAms don't seem to realize that here in the USA we are the minority who face discrimination
against us by others. Therefore there is a NEED to become politically involved to defend our rights. Back in our respective "old countries" we were the majority. So we could take or leave politics, as we please. Spread that message far and wide please!!! SB

| My name is Lan Lan Chen. A friend of mine has been forwarding me emails from
your organization. I find them fascinating, and also very true, as I have
experienced workplace discrimination first hand. It's disheartening to see
many Asian Americans stay complacent even as these ugly statistics
and falsehoods come to light. I would like to see how I may participate in
your organization, but the "contact us" link on the website is broken. Is
there a SoCal chapter that I may join? I currently r ... more ...

| Dear Lan Lan: You can help by either giving time and/or money. We also have a sister organization
called 80-20 PAC. It has members who pay dues. Go visit either http://www.80-20Educatinal Foundation.org and/or http://www.80-20initiative.net . There is a Los Angeles chapter which is not active now. Want to help organize one? E-mail slin@ingenious.com . Thanks for offering to help. Wish that there are more people like you. :-) SB

| The root cause of AsAms low social achievement is our small population: 4 percent vs 13 percent Blacks and 15 percent Hispanics. If a company's majority employees and customers are white, why would they elect an Asian American to be its spokesperson? Yes we can unite and get a group clout and demand government to enforce some executive order to require companies to appoint more AsAm managers, but the government can never mandate the general population to do business with a particular race. Do yo ... more ...

| The population of Jewish Ams is 6 million (compared to 15 million AsAms) and has been so for decades. Remember that Jewish used to be most discriminated against race? Remember Holocaust? What changed? The establishment of their own GROUP political clout!!! Many AsAms think "merit" will enable them to do well. That may be true in their "old countries" where no one discriminated against them. In American, AsAm must have sufficient GROUP political clout to first fend off discrimination again ... more ...

| Thank you so much for your series on Asian American Inequality! You should assemble the list of myths and facts into a file. Some of us can use that for our classes. I am sorry to say that, in the mid-west, most Americans still think of discirmination as pertaining to Blacks. Clearly, our national conversation on under representation and systemic discrimination has pretty much left out Asian and Native Americans.
When I was working and living in Massachusetts, New York and California, I woul ... more ...

| You are so right in stating that "many of us have internalized the dominant narrative too well to even whine.... " Your comment indeed brings out a unique significance of 80-20. We encourage Asian Ams not to behave like ostriches, not to cry sour grape, but unite and act to win ourselves equal opportunity. Thanks for organizing a Dayton, Ohio chapter. | Thank you for all the work you have done. Here is what I think:
One reason is that the AsAms have a strong culture perspective sometimes that is not easy to give up. AsAms most likely enjoy our own culture too much to give it up and enjoy American culture instead, such as play football, crack jokes in a cocktail party. Most of the time, even when I was in the party, I would be psychologically uncomfortable in doing things like that. I am not sure it is a bad or good thing, it is just different ... more ...

| No one is suggesting that we should give up our culture. However, if you want to be a manager in America, you MUST get accustomed to the American way of life, without giving up your culture. How
can you manage in America, without feeling comfortable in America?
For those who want to enjoy equal opportunity, then the biggest thing we need to do is to pay attention to establish OUR OWN GROUP political clout -- like the 6 million Jewish Ams. If 1 million AsAms (i.e. 1 in 15) will donate ... more ...

| What you said is correct, however, rational won't be able to replace the feeling. I just tell a truth, and we have to find a way to dealing with it. I believe I have been doing a much better job involved with the American groups than a lot of other AmAs yet, still feel not comfortable. It is not necessary our fault, other people might think that is our fault. Inside of Chinese community, we do not see a lot of unified force, but work like sand, it is not good either. I felt that we are lack of ef ... more ...

Yes, your honesty in expressing your inner feeling is deeply appreciated. And I replied in kind.
Thank you so much for commenting on my comments. You are the first supporter to have done so. You may not know much about me. However, do we really know about any of the political leaders in our life? We don't. But we saw enough grounds to give them some support. Hence AsAms need to hve the political maturity to decide supporting 80-20 given its current record and performance. Because if ... more ...

The Ugly Truth about AsAm Inequality (Part 5)
Why is 80-20 sending you the "Ugly Truth" series? To whine
or to prepare for community-wide action?
Additional popular MYTHS against us are debunked below.
MYTH 3: AsAms simply don't have the ambition, language ability, social
and
communication skills, & sense of humor to make managers.
Truth:
The same accusations were made against women, blacks, and Hispanics
earlier. Now that there are hundreds of thousands of female, black and
Hispanic managers, on account of the enforcement of EO 11246, such
nonsense are no longer spread or believed. The same will prove to be the case
for AsAms, once EO 11246 is enforced for us. For more details,
see Footnote 1.
MYTH 4: AsAms are mostly new immigrants. So most AsAms don't
have the seniority in workplaces to make managers yet.
Truth:
Hispanics are mostly new immigrants too. When compared to Hispanics.,
AsAms have MORE seniority with their current employers. When we don’t
have the GROUP political clout, then the lack of seniority is used as a lie
to keep us beffudled. For a table of comparison, see Footnote 2.
MYTH 5: "Latent prejudice" against blacks is certainly higher. If blacks
are making managers, and AsAms are not, it proves that
AsAms just don't have the ability to be managers.
Truth:
"Latent prejudice" against blacks is indeed higher on many streets in
America, not that prejudice should be tolerated anywhere against anyone.
However, blatant discrimination against AsAms is higher in workplaces,
because AsAms don't have the GROUP political clout to get EO 11246
enforced for us.
Have you heard enough "Ugly Truth"???
Are you ready to join the
fight for equal opportunity?
Dear readers:
What will it take to get a minority in the USA equal opportunity in
workplaces? Tell us your views/conclusions. There are no
clearly right or wrong answers. We just want to know your views.
http://www.80-20educationalfoundation.org/politicaledu/posterboard.asp .
Do your part! "God helps those who help themselves."
Respectfully yours,
S. B. Woo
President, 80-20 Educational Foundation, Inc.
Footnote 1
How come the same myth is still held against AsAms? Two main
reasons. (1) Women, blacks and Hispanics have more GROUP political
clout. People who utter such stereo negative image against them face
severe repercussions. (2) Once the individuals in those groups become
convinced that they have the equal opportunity to be promoted, they
worked in earnest to develop the skills they need to become managers.
If AsAms are smart & hard working enough to get advanced degrees,
AsAms can certainly learn how to communicate tactfully, and crack jokes in
cocktail parties with a little hard work. The latter is the easier skills.
Footnote 2
See the Table below for worker with 5 or more years with their current
employers comparing Asian to Hispanics:
